Don't Wait on Someone Else to Encourage You

Yesterday at church, the choir sung one of my favorite gospel songs, “Encourage Yourself” by Donald Lawrence and The Tri-City Singers. The first verse is my favorite:

Sometimes you have to encourage yourself.
Sometimes you have to speak victory during the test.
And no matter how you feel,
speak the word and you will be healed;
speak over yourself,
encourage yourself in the Lord.

This song always speaks to me because it’s great to have others encourage you when you are going through life’s trials and tribulations, but are you encouraging yourself? The tongue has POWER. (That one sentence is an entire blog post within itself.) We may not always have someone available to affirm us when we need to hear it the most. We may not always have someone to tell us that we are doing a great job and that we will win. Get in the habit of doing it yourself.

Speak life into your situation no matter how “dead” it feels.

Every morning when you wake up, look in the mirror and speak positively to yourself. If you’re a visual person like me, you may want to try writing personal affirmations on Post-it Notes and sticking them around your room and/or your mirror. If you’re into reading scripture, I would suggest finding one that inspires you and repeat it throughout the day. For example, I often repeat Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Literally just one sentence gets me through tough periods that I encounter during the day.

I believe that channeling negative feelings into reassuring yourself helps you get closer to your breakthrough. This is an important step forward towards your healing. Now, it’s HARD trying to remain positive in difficult circumstances, so trust me, I am not saying that this is will be a breeze … BUT try it. It’s better to try to encourage yourself than to wallow in your troubles and sink further into sadness, anger and/or confusion.

So today, keep this lyric in mind, “Sometimes you have to speak victory during the test.” In case you need a reminder that you can make it through, here you go: YOU CAN MAKE IT THROUGH. You WILL be victorious. You WILL succeed. You WILL come out of your storm better than ever. You got this because the devil is a WHOLE lie. Now, tell yourself that!

P.S. Check out the song below, then tell me how you encourage yourself in the comments!
