ADOM has the pleasure of featuring Kris Crews, our September Woman of the Month! Kris is a young student who is striving to empower others will walking in her purpose. Keep reading to learn more about Kris and all of her endeavors!
ADOM: Tell us a little more about Kris.
Kris Crews: My name is Kris Crews and I am a college student from Columbus, Ohio. I love, love, love writing and traveling. I think those are great forms of expression and it’s awesome to explore outside of your comfortable surroundings. I also love being active, eating yummy foods and having endless movie marathons/binging series with my sisters and friends.
ADOM: What does women empowerment mean to you?
KC: Women empowerment to me is about uplifting each other and encouraging women to be strong, courageous and fearless individuals who never settle for less, but to always keep pushing even when the odds are against them. In my young adult life, I have definitely seen women bring down other women. Us women have to stick together. If we don’t stick together and help one another, then who will? But while helping uplift women it’s important not to oppress other groups of people as well.
ADOM: When and why was your website, iamkriscrews.com, created?
KC: My website was created in 2013 during my freshman year of college. My blog started out as a hobby originally. At the time I was a psychology major, but there was something in me that told me to switch to journalism. I never really thought I was great at writing, but the more I did it the more I fell in love with it and the fact that I could creatively express myself on outlets like blogging sites. After I switched majors, my motivational blog was created and it has definitely become something I’ve fallen in love with. I have always considered myself a positive person and I wanted to encourage people to see life differently and to be motivated. Life gets really hard and I wanted to be someone who could be a light in the darkness and to essentially give hope to those who were hopeless in their current situations.
ADOM: Besides your website, how do you use your platform to empower women?
KC: Through social media I definitely try to encourage others to love themselves and to empty their fears to be filled with faith. Social media is such a powerful place. You can use it to tear people down or you can use it for good. I have done social media projects, one of them called #ProjectIAmBeautiful, to encourage others to love themselves for who they are and to acknowledge their beauty. Oftentimes we forget why we are beautiful because we are so focused on trying to look like someone else or to look perfect because of the media’s standards. But it’s important to love yourself for you because once that’s gone you have nothing left.
ADOM: What or who has inspired you throughout life?
KC: My older sisters definitely inspire me. I don’t tell them enough but they are two of the hardest working women I know. They are confident in what they do and they remind me that being independent is not a bad thing. They dedicate their lives to helping others and that is truly a beautiful thing. Two of my favorite singers, India Arie and Tori Kelly, also inspire me. Their music carries such a powerful message. They stay true to who there are and are outspoken about their faith.
ADOM: What advice would you give to young women that would like to create something of their own that will empower other women?
KC: Just do it. Don’t be afraid to go after what you want. We were created for a special purpose and it’s important that we embrace it. Learn, create and share. Stay strong and true to who you are. When someone says no keep pushing forward. Lastly, I would tell women to remember that they have a voice that can be heard by many. Don’t let anyone take it away from you. Know when to put your foot down, but also know when to be gracious and kind. Be great and always stay bright.
